Wessex Section trip to Ypres, May 30th-June 3rd
At the beginning of June, a group of Wessex members made a long weekend trip to Ypres in Belgium, site of some of the major battles of the Great War. The trip was planned and led by Wessex members Steve and Alice Bockett who have a keen interest in the history of the war, are extremely knowledgeable on the subject and have visited the area many times. A total of seven cars and 14 individuals made the trip, crossing via the Channel Tunnel and staying in a very nice hotel right on the beautiful Grote Markt in Ypres. Our days were spent driving our Alfas in convoy, touring battlefield sites and cemeteries in the Ypres Salient all of which were very moving. We attended the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, a poignant act of remembrance carried out every night by the local fire brigade. All of this still left plenty of time for eating and drinking the wonderful Belgian food and beer ! There will hopefully be a fuller article in the AROC magazine in due course but for now, we record a huge thanks to Steve and Alice for organising and leading the trip.
