Model History
The Type 952 Giulia is a compact executive car manufactured by Milanese carmaker Alfa Romeo. Originally unveiled to the press at the Alfa museum in 2015 production commenced in 2016, and is the first production saloon since the 159 ceased production in 2011.
The Veloce variant with (276 bhp), joined the Quadrifolio (2.9l V6), Super and Special (200bhp petrol or 2.2l diesel) and launched with an all-new longitudinally mounted 2 litre petrol engine, rear-wheel drive layout with 50:50 weight distribution. The Veloce variant also has specific bumpers and a black gloss door trim. It launched with distinctive performance components like a special rear valance with double exhaust pipes and 5-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels. The interior options were black, red or tan leather sports seats and a leather sports steering wheel, aluminium inserts on the dashboard, central tunnel, door panels and Xenon headlights.
For MY21, it featured a 8.8inch touch-screen colour display with wired Carplay or Android Auto.
The options list included
- Mechanical slip differential
- Upgraded audio system
- Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) - adaptive cruise control and semi-autonomous driving.
- Sunroof
I had test-driven a Super in 2017 but decided to go a different direction then; a BMW G30 530D. When my deal came up I still had the Alfa itch to scratch. I loved the fast handling of the Giulia so went back for another test drive this time in the Veloce it immediately eliminated every other alternative that I had looked at. These were the usual, or should that be ubiquitous, German brands that I really respect but don't really love. I was sold.
I ordered my Nero Vulcano Giulia 952 [Performance Brake] Veloce from Glyn Hopkin Alfa Romeo in Romford. Despite in August 2021. It was a factor the delivery delays common in 2021, my Veloce arrived only a few weeks late, in October 2021.
Specification
The Veloce I test drove was in a classic colourway: Misano blue with tan interior and yellow calipers: very tempting, but there is something about the Vulcano Black and Vesuvio Grey in the flesh that hits differently. I went with the Black. They all turn heads but the Giulia takes on a different persona in black - it's much moodier. I went with all black everything. MY21 has black decals, black interior and I have black diamond cut 19inch rims with black calipers. Yes, I realise that Black with Black with Red interior is a classic look but I'd seen that movie before and wanted something special.
