The S4 cloverleaf

This was the last incarnation of the first spider produced in 1966. The 2 litre model came with a Motronic integrated electronic multi-point injection/ignition system. The catalysed version had a maximum output of 120HP at 5800 rpm with a top speed of 190kph.

The Spider has modest acceleration of 10.4 seconds for 0-100kph and 32 seconds for the standing km. A step backwards compared with the previous carburettored 2 litre (8.3 seconds 0-100kph). The S4 has particularly long gear ratios which penalise sprint.

From the design aspect, the most significant innovation to this series was the radical restyling of the car’s rear end.  This included the removal of the much-debated rubber spoiler and the adoption of brand new light clusters streching from one side of the tail to the other.  The frontal was restyled, and the mini skirts were eliminated.

The cabin got a good number of improvements, including redesigned and lower seats which slightly increased the room at the disposal of the driver and passenger.

In August 2022 the Club was approached by an Agency that was supporting a Prada photo shoot at Dungeness featuring Alfa Romeo F1 driver Zhou Guanyu.  The photographer was requesting a Silver S4.  I was approached by our Section Secretary and we agreed that we would help in the shoot.  The shoot took place in front of Dungeness Nuclear Power Station and the surrounding 'dunes'.  The shoot was published in the 23 August 2022 China issue of Madame Figaro Hommes and an article prepared by Paul Newberry and myself was published in the AROC magazine dated October 2022

Spa Classic May 2024 cloverleaf

A 650 mile round trip drive down to Spa with 3 other cars using Le Shuttle. We stayed at an AirBNB in Stavelot, a perfect base for the 5 minute drive to the circuit where one of my colleagues had secured parking in the F1 Paddock.

It's a great meeting for those who haven't experienced Classic racing and it is very much more relaxed than either the Lemans Classic or Goodwood.  Plus the circuit is superb!

A 4 day trip to Lemans to see the Classic with friends.  A great event, though guaranteed to be a little damp at some point! In all a 700 mile trip.
