Buying a S4 Spider 30 years after my first one cloverleaf

In 1992 I owned a gorgeous yellow S4 Spider with black interior. It had 7,000 km on the clock and was LHD, the car that Alfa UK had themselves used for their Motorshow stands.  Shortly after, late in 1993 I was moved overseas on a "one year contract".  The car went into temporary storage.  Little did I know that I would stay overseas for 18 years and sadly never see it again. There is no trace now on DVLA records of that car (J58 NLL).

After I returned to the UK I became set on finding another Yellow/Black S4 Spider with good provenance and clean history, but they just don't come up for sale very often and when they do, the condition and maintenance can be variable.

So, when I saw H180 JLE for sale quite local to me, and having seen its history file and examined its condition, I decided that Red/Tan was not a bad second choice. I purchased this car in June 2022 and it has been a joy to own and drive ever since.

This car is lft hand drive with a very smooth five speed manual gearbox, and a 2 litre fuel injected engine producing 120 horsepower and a 0-60 time of approximately 9 seconds.

History and Maintenance cloverleaf

The car was first registered in Padua, Italy in 1991 and was for period owned by the De Lannoy family (belgian Royalty) in Rome before it was imported to the UK (first UK registration was in Oct 2001). I acquired the vehicle in June 2022. The V5 shows 6 former keepers and the current odometer mileage is 119,367 km which equates to 74,600 miles.

The car has not been converted to RHD but left as original. Most Alfa enthusiasts will know that UK conversions were done by either SeaKing or Bell and Colvill, and some were not without issues.

The vehicle has an extensive service and mainetnance history file for all of its life in the UK since 2001 including many V5, MOT, tax discs etc. Two key sets, the original Italian books/service pack as well as English version, and original tool kit are all present.

In 2010 it had a full respray and the paintwork remains in excellent condition. A new hood was fitted in 2013 (in excellent condition) and the car benefits from an Alfaholics Fast Raod Suspension upgrade.

When the previous owner (Nick Frost in York) acquired the car, it underwent a comprehensive overhaul with all the interior taken out as well as the engine which was fitted with new pistons and liners as well as many other repairs / refurbishments including dynamt xtreme insulation being fitted.  A photographic record is on file.

This car has been to Italy more than once and it is cold in the Alps/Pyrenees !

In my recent ownership some minor paintwork correction and a couple of small dents were repaired.  Additional recent maintenance work includes:   new battery, various washers/seals/gaskets, new starter motor and new heater fan motor and heater control valve, and the underneath has been sealed (Dinitrol).

Interior cloverleaf

This is in good to excellent condition with a Nardi steering wheel.  The car was stripped down by the previous owner who took it to Italy on more than one occasion. They decided to put some dynamat insulation on the vehicle for those trips over the mountains.

The mohair hood is in a like new / execllent condition, there is a tan colour hood bag/cover and there is also an original factory hardtop for the car as well in good condition.
