Searching for my S2 Spider cloverleaf

Having owned a 33 1.5 Ti Veloce and a gorgeous LHD Yellow S4 Spider in the late 1980s / early 1990s, I moved overseas with work for more than 20 years. When we returned to the UK in 2012, I was initially distracted by a large farm renovation and the need for practical 4x4s, but the plan was always to go back to Alfa ownership. So I started looking carefully for a nice clean example of the S2 hoping that it wouldn't be a red one.  I didn't want to get into an overpriced bidding war on websites/auctions so I patiently watched and waited for an opportunity.  By chance one comment on an AROC Facebook Group led me to Luciano Capozzoli (of Auto Capozzoli in Yeovil). He seemed ready to sell a vehicle they had recently acquired and after an independent inspection conducted by John Edward Vines a purchase was agreed.

History and Maintenance cloverleaf

This Spider in porcelain white with a black interior is a low owners, low mileage (currently 61k) , original UK supplied RHD vehicle.  The car was first registed on 2 August 1976 to John Noad (Holdings) Ltd in Ascot and immediately got transferred into the personal name of London businessman Sir John Noad. On his retirement, in 2010 the car was transferred to his company's MD, Mr Mark Evans. Mark sold it to Auto Capozzoli and I acquired it privately from Luciano Capozzoli in 2020.

This car has the 2000 Veloce engine generating 130 horsepower and a 0-60 time of approximately 8 seconds. The car has twin Weber carburretors and a five speed manual gearbox. There is no power steering in the series 2 Alfa Spiders.

The car seems to be very original and has been well cared for and garaged through its lifetime. The history file is pretty complete for the past 25 years including some old tax discs, MOT certificates and correspondence from John Noad.  It has been undersealed and was serviced for most of its history in the file by Ken Bell and his team at Alfanatics in Fleet, Hampshire, well known Alfa Romeo specialists.  I spoke with Ken personally before purchasing this car and even though he is now retired he vouched for the history, quality and integrity of the car.

Since I acquired it the Spider has been through a comprehensive check and minor refresh. I use Beverley Auto Services (Ben Baxter). Although he has mostly a VW Audi background,  Ben has taken a lot of time to get familiar with the car. It spent 6 weeks on his spare ramp undergoing various minor improvements with just about every main gasket and seal from which oil can drip being replaced !

Recent work in my ownership includes: minor paint corrections, new fan belt, new rev counter cable, new brake master cyclinder, brake servos repair/serice kit, rewiring for radio/cassette, new heater control valve, new front shocks, new front brake calliper.

She has a good MOT history and current clean MOT, even though formally exempt as a historic vehicle. Original technical manuals and book pack and tool kit are present plus a hood bag/cover. No hard top was purchased with this car. Two sets of keys are with this car.

Badges and other minor details were freshed and I myself removed what I could from the engine bay and cleaned that up and resprayed what could be reached without a full engine removal. The bodywork is in great shape and the original paintwork is also pretty good.  Both the interior and the exterior I would rate as Good to excellent, not concours but I drive this car regularly.  She is not a garage/trailer queen; she likes to stretch her legs.

I didn't want to invest in the time and cost of a full engine removal and paint respray at the current time so I removed the parts/details that I could from around the the edges of the engine bay , cleaned it up and then resprayed with a paint code matched aerosol spray.

The interior is black. It seems that the seats have been recovered and I am not sure if stereo speakers were an after-market addition.  Generally in good order with some nice gentle patina !
