The GT cloverleaf

This model was produced by Alfa Romeo from 2003 to 2010. It was given the type number 937. Built at the Pomigliano plant, it was based on the FIAT C-platform with the body styled by Bertone, giving it a timeless and elegant look.

Technically a coupé, it's a two-door hatchback with five full seats. Most of the mechanicals are shared with the 156 and 147 models, with the same double-wishbone front suspension and Macpherson struts.

Engine options include 1.8 and 2.0l petrol engines, a 1.9l turbodiesel and the top of the range is a 3.2l 24v Busso V6.

In 2004, the Alfa Romeo GT was voted the world's most beautiful coupe in the annual 'World's Most Beautiful Automobile' (L'Automobile più Bella del Mondo) awards.

This GT cloverleaf

Purchased in 2010 to replace an Alfa 146 that wasn't quick enough on track days, I was immediately impressed by how well the car handled.

Named Massimiliano (Max for short), this car is extremely practical for carrying the family around but is also a real driver's car. With the Busso V6 under the bonnet, he's properly quick, with tons of torque and no lag on the power.

He performs well on track and at Prescott Hill Climb (pictured above) and also carried me around the NC500 in comfort with a full set of camping equipment in the boot!

Admittedly, it's not a cheap car to run. Alfas need to maintained properly by a specialist who knows what they are doing. Don't ask about the miles per gallon. I did upgrade the diff to a Quaife LSD a couple of years ago and it's made the handling even more stable.

I haven't yet found another car that I enjoy driving as much so I expect to be keeping him for the forseeable future.
