Section visit to Filching Manor on 11th Oct
A good turn out gathered at 10.00 on the Sat morning for our tour of the collection of cars, boats which was originally put together by the late Paul Foulkes Halbard and is now being continued by his son Karl Foulkes Halbard. A private collection houses many exhibits. Including a 1903 chain driven Mercedes, the collection contains the very rare 1898 Orient Express (one of only two left working in the world), a 1907 Corbin Racer, several Bugatti cars, a fantastic 1904 chain driven Mercedes racing car, numerous motor cycles and many, many more. The centre of the collection is Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Bluebird K3 world record breaking boat which the Halbard family saved and restored, along with other famous Campbell cars, boats and memorabilia. The tour lasted a couple of hours and halfway through, we enjoyed some bacon rolls, home made rolls, and home made cakes and other yummy treats! After which we were given a talk by Karl, telling us about the story behind the restoration which finally led to being able to run K3 on the Swiss end Lago Maggiore from Locarno, where the original record was achieved.
A thanks to Stan Bailey for organising the visit and the volunteers who made the very delicious brunch, with all proceeds going to charity.
