Report: SWAD Sunday May 20

After many years absent, South West Alfa Day made a welcome return to the calender on Sunday May 20. The venue selected for its rebirth was The Haynes International Motor Museum at Sparkford (Yeovil) .

To fulfil a promise to Clive Baker, Secretary of the AROC Somerset Section who had organised the event, we’d pledged to support him and his efforts and so it was that a group of us from here in the Yorkshire Section made a weekend of it and stayed overnight the day before SWAD at The Preston Hotel in Yeovil. This, as it turned out, proved to be an excellent choice as the staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and very friendly with the plus that our drive down to the West Country was totally untroubled; the distinct lack of traffic being due to The Royal Wedding and The FA Cup Final, both of which were going on as we journeyed down south. Clive; that was a master stroke!

Taking advantage of the pre-booking arrangements offered by the Club, after being given an event programme, we entered the events field and were directed to our parking spaces by the efficient marshals on duty. We have to say that this was in our opinion an inspired choice of venue as the cars on display, the friends that we met and the superb museum exhibits all contributed to a what was a brilliant day. Even the weather played its part with sunshine all the way.

Highlights? Well, there were many but mostly they were dominated by the number of rarities on show. The raft of photographs taken on the day are testament to that, with the advantage that the Alfa Romeos were displayed in order of the decade that they were produced; a nice touch and a very successful way of displaying the cars.

The Mueum itself was outstanding and was well worth the discounted entry prices offered to event programme-holders. The Red Room was of special interest as was the Ford Model T on show. Overall, it was a super day enjoyed by all of us. Well done Clive and all who helped in the organisation!
