Spettacolo Sportivo Alfa Romeo 2010: a double feast

August 28th/29th. – Circuitpark Zandvoort

Members of the SCARB, Holland’s largest Alfa Romeo club, already regard their annual club weekend as one big feast! Add to that, the Centenary of Alfa Romeo and you have the makings of a spectacular event! During 2010, Alfisti throughout Europe and the rest of the world, can choose from a wide variety of events dedicated to their favoured car make. So we ask, does it make sense to choose the Centenary as the main theme of the Spettacolo Sportivo Alfa Romeo?
The answer to that is a big YES! The SCARB has a reputation in bringing together rare and exotic Alfas. This year the club will simply present an even more exclusive collection of high quality classic Alfas, pre-war models included. Visitors can also stroll along a timeline and discover the model development from 1950 up to today. Each model will be represented.
It will not just be the cars creating an Italianissimo atmosphere; many suppliers of Italian lifestyle products, catering with the focus on Italian food and of course Italian music will bring a genuine party mood to even the most reserved visitor.
All details concerning the weekend will be published by July 1st on the www.spettacolosportivo.eu website.
The program also features races (Alfa Challenge and DC Historic Touring cars and GTs), driving improvement courses, and track time. Younger Alfisti can enjoy themselves in the Kids Paradise. Visitors come over from all parts of Europe to join the Spettacolo Sportivo. During the event weekend, the SCARB expects a total of 1,400 Alfa Romeo’s coming to Zandvoort.

21 – 22 August - National Alfa Weekend –
Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb, Worcestershire, WR6 6RP

In this anniversary year for Alfa Romeo, we are delighted to announce National Alfa Weekend to be hosted by the Midland Automobile Club at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb on 21nd & 22nd August 2010.

About Shelsley

Shelsley Walsh is the oldest motor sport venue in continuous use in the world. First used in 1905, it is older than Indianapolis, Le Mans or Monza. Brooklands has been and gone, but Shelsley Walsh is still here, as old as the sport but as modern as today.
The venue was the first purpose built motor sport venue in history and has continued to be at the heart of motor sport and sporting innovation. It featured the first electrical motor sport timekeeping and the first motor sport outside broadcast with the innovations continuing through more than 100 years of continuous improvement. Raymond Mays perfected his ERA racing cars at Shelsley in the 1930's and his later BRM's featured at Shelsley. In 2010 the first modern purpose built electric racing car will be competing at Shelsley and it will carry the BRM name.

Where is Shelsley Walsh?

Shelsley Walsh is a very beautiful small village in Worcestershire at the top of the western valley side of the River Teme within the splendid Malvern Hills.

National Alfa Day

With over 2000 people through the gates, this year’s National Alfa Day on Sunday 5th July was one of the most successful ever. Nearly 800 Alfa Romeos of all varieties, from the earliest examples right through to the latest MiTo models, made the journey from all over the UK to the Alfa Romeo Owners Club’s premier annual event, which for this year was held at Newby Hall and Gardens near Ripon in North Yorkshire.

8C Competizione

Visitors could get up-close and personal with not just one but two of Alfa’s ultra-rare 8c Competizione 180mph Super Cars present on the events field and Sponsors Piccadilly Motors of Knaresborough brought along another eleven showroom-fresh Alfa Romeo models for visitors to drool over. Piccadilly Motors also sponsored the immensely popular Auto Test, where Club members were invited to pit their wits against one another in a driving skills test with Trophies on offer for the winners.

National Alfa Day was also the venue for the Club’s National Concours d’Elegance Competition. Sponsored by online parts supplier SHOP4PARTS of Bradford, there were some of the best-kept examples of the marque to be seen anywhere in the UK on show and this keenly-contested event proved to be an attention-grabbing attraction for visitors throughout the day

Alfasuds

That Alfa Romeo model with the cult-like following, the Alfasud, was the featured Car of the Show at Newby Hall and there were over thirty of these ground-breaking and iconic cars to be seen on display, which was something of a modern-day record. To add interest, there was also the opportunity to compare head-to-head the original Alfasud and Sprint with their spiritual successor the new MiTo on the Car of the Show stand.

Bucking the recession, we saw a well-supported Trade Village at National Alfa Day where exhibitors, among them Bauer Millett, JustSuds, Mr Sud, Mark Bennett Photography, AutoGlym, Mario Veneziale (Spider Parts), Photography UK and Tool Buddies, reported brisk takings.

Away from the action, Newby Hall proved to be just about the perfect venue for the day with many attractions and amenities for families in evidence, among them the award-winning gardens and sculpture park with Newby’s famous miniature railway proving to be a hit with children and grown-ups alike.

Stuart Gill, Administrator at Newby Hall, said, “National Alfa Day at Newby enjoyed great weather and a very good turnout of visitors and enthusiasts, making it a great success all around. This was the first time the Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club has staged its event at Newby Hall but we hope that we will see them here again in the future.”

All-in-all, a very successful day for the Club. We hope to be returning to this fabulous family-friendly venue in the not too distant future. Grateful thanks to AlfaOwner.com and members of the AROC Yorkshire Section for their contribution to our big day. We hope you all had fun!

Spring Alfa Day

Ed in the P3

Over 500 Alfas arrived at Old Warden for Spring Alfa Day and the Shuttleworth Spring Air Display. The centre of attraction for Alfa enthusiasts was the P3 Tipo B racing car that Richard Shuttleworth drove to victory in the 1935 Donington Grand Prix. Ed McDonough donned his racing overalls and helmet to sit in the P3 for photographers. This magnificent car was posed beside a de Havilland Moth of similar vintage to create a truly evocative scene.

Very special 2300

The Alfa Romeo hospitality unit was staffed by the Alfa dealer Marshall of Hitchin who brought along a range of current Alfa models including the MiTo. Sales and service staff were on hand to give advice and show people around the cars.

Classic greeting

Members provided the usual great variety of cars with 105 series models of all types outnumbering the other classics as usual. Winners of the various awards included Andrew Stevens’ recently imported gold Bertone, still with Australian registration, who won the Members’ Choice award and Tony Daher’s GTV6 that picked up the Chairman’s Choice award. Tony is a regular prize-winner at our events.

The Club Shop stall, now run by Lavenham Press, did brisk business with their new range of clothing and Autoglym and Chris Heath Models were amongst the other trade stands.

The weather was a bit bracing during the morning with a strong wind and threatening clouds. However, the sun increasingly made an appearance during the afternoon and everyone enjoyed a generally dry day. The air display featured many of the Shuttleworth Collection’s pre-war aircraft and the pilots had to contend with a brisk crosswind whilst going through their routine over the runway.
A full report and members’ comments will appear in the June Magazine.

Brooklands Spring Italian Car Day

The AROC was well represented at this season-opening event held on Saturday 2nd May 2009. Our parking area, sited on the old helipad, just below the iconic Member's Banking, was completely full by mid-morning. Here are just a few photos of the Alfas that graced our fine display.
