The Alfasud was a model which, in its own way, reversed the fortunes of the Alfa Romeo brand.
At the time of its introduction, if any car should have accelerated the then-declining fortune of the firm, it was the Alfasud. Instead, it brought Alfa Romeo engineering and quite exceptional levels of performance within reach of a wider ownership and all at a at cost that undercut all its rivals, including the popular but ultimately banal Austin Allegro, on the UK market.
What the Alfasud did achieve, in buckets, was to teach a bargain-hunting public the joys of driving fast and accurately, leaving many a young man with a grin as wide as the Grand Canyon and the determination to buy a bigger, better Alfa when he grew old and rich - hence the success of the current range that started with the 164.
The balance, grip, cornering and utterly predictable behaviour of this little Alfa Romeo, even in extremis, set a standard that is even now still outstanding; for it was the Peugeot 205 or Renault-Williams of its day.
And we're pleased to say that the Alfasud will be the featured Car of the Show at Newby Hall. In conjunction with the AROC Alfasud Register there'll be a display of as many Alfasuds as we can get together at any one time. The Alfasud Register’s latter day record is twenty-two cars set at Summer Alfa Day at Renishaw Hall recently. Let’s see if we can beat this record!
As the featured Car of the Show at Newby Hall, we will be taking a prominent and photogenic location close to the Hall for an imposing backdrop and we'll be giving our a stand a distinctive look with the use of bunting, banners and other display decoration.
If you'd like to see your Alfasud as part of our display, then please contact Colin Metcalfe or Bryan Alexander with details (year and model) of the car you'll be bringing to National Alfa Day. Book now as places will be available strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. Once we've heard from you, we'll send out a Windscreen Pass for your car by email. Please print it off when you get it and display in your windscreen prior to arriving at Newby Hall. This will help the Marshals to identify you and to direct you to the appropriate spot on the day.
Entries will be accepted right up to Friday 3rd July and remember, you don't have to be an AROC Member in order to join in and show your car in our display. Contact us now if you want to share your enthusiasm for the iconic Alfasud with us!
Model specialists Justsuds and Mr Sud will also be in attendance on our stand. Should be good! We’ll see you there!
